In 1893, young George Washington Gale Ferris Jr. designed the world's first Ferris wheel for the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. Standing at 264 feet high, weighing 2,200 tons, and with a passenger capacity of 2,160, it was known as the "Ferris Wheel".
